The Balkan Herps is an international collaborative project aiming to study amphibians and reptiles in the Balkan Peninsula. Its background database contains point records of species. Currently the primary focus of the project is to investigate the relationship between amphibian and reptile species ranges, diversity and protected areas (PA). We will create species distribution models (SDM) based on the occurrence records. We would like to assess the efficiency of the existing PA network and detect needs for PA designation with the systematic conservation planning tool Zonation. Our aim is to collect as many records of amphibians and reptiles as possible from every species of the Balkans. Everybody can upload their records to the database with or without registration. Ancient burial mounds, the so called ’kurgans’ are one of the most iconic and widespread historical sites of the Eurasian steppes. Their estimated number is approximately half million in Eurasia. Kurgans were predominantly built during the Eneolithics and Iron Age by steppic people such as the Yamnayas (3300–2600 BC), Scythians (900–100 BC) and Sarmatians (600 BC–400 AD). Besides their cultural, historical and spiritual importance kurgans have a considerable nature conservation role, as they harbour an outstandingly high grassland biodiversity even in transformed landscapes. Despite their special importance there are many factors threatening both their structure and the grassland habitats on them. For the effective protection of the kurgans an up-to-date database is needed as a basis containing basic information on the conservation status of the kurgans. To contribute to this aim the Eurasian Kurgan Database collects and provides information on the location of the kurgans, the current land use types, threatening factors affecting the biodiversity of the kurgans, level of woody encroachment, and the presence of cultural and historical features. The aim of the Eurasian Kurgan Database is to collect and provide basic data for setting up effective nature conservation management plans regarding kurgan protection and also to collect the cultural values harboured by kurgans.

Corfu (Kerkyra) has a comparatively rich Odonata fauna and we have recently, in cooperation with The International Dragonfly Fund (IDF) published a first overview (Stille, M. & Stille, B. 2018. The Dragonflies of Corfu. IDF Report 116. 237 pp.). As there is no water management plan and a huge influx of tourists, leading to high water consumption and a presently uncontrolled garbage situation on the island, there is a distinct potential threat to dragonflies, as well as many other groups. The need for increased awareness among residents, as well as visitors, is consequently essential for the protection of the dragonflies and their habitats. To support this, a website and a supporting Facebook page will be created, through which approved members should be able to enter data. The data will be used for e.g. periodic reports in cooperation with IDF.

Egy anya tudja a legjobban: A vonulási viselkedés anyai programozása A vonuló madarak populációi jelentős csökkenésen mentek keresztül az elmúlt néhány évtizedben. Ezzel szemben még mindig limitált a tudásunk arra nézve, hogy milyen eséllyel alkalmazkodhatnak a vonuló fajok rohamosan változó környezetükhöz. Ennek megjóslásához sokkal pontosabb és részletesebb tudásra van szükségünk a vonulási viselkedés kialakulásáért felelős öröklődési és fejlődéstani mechanizmusokról. A kutatásunk egy fontos és eddig nem vizsgált mechanizmust, az anyai hatást, illetve az anyai stressz szerepét, veszi célpontba a vonulási viselkedés kialakulásánál. A kutatás eredményeként, például közelebb kerülünk olyan lényeges kérdések megválaszolásához, mint hogy milyen módon jelenik meg, illetve tűnik el a vonulási viselkedés egy poulációból zavarás és környezetváltozás hatására. Végül, egy további fontos eredménye lehet az ilyen jellegű vizsgálatoknak az, amikor természetvédelmi szakembereket és törvényhozókat tudunk informálni egy fontos viselkedés, mint a vonulás, környezeti stressz érzékenységéről. This database can be practically empty, but I really would like to collect these data! The information in this database are subjective but can be underpinned by citations which contains previous observations from the same place. Közülük a vörös róka mára nyilvánvalóan beköltözött a lakott területekre, akár nagyvárosokba, és az aranysakál városi megjelenésére is vannak már példák A Ravaszdi Radar önkéntes adatgyűjtő program elsődleges célja e két faj városiasodásának vizsgálata és nyomon követése, közösségi segítséggel: bárki, aki rókát vagy sakált lát, beküldheti az észlelését és annak körülményeit, ezzel nagyban segítve a szakemberek munkáját. Elsődlegesen a lakott területeken történt észlelések lényegesek, de minden, a két faj hazai előfordulására vonatkozó megfigyelés hasznos lehet és örömmel fogadjuk. Észlelés esetén, vadállatokról lévén szó, tartson tőlük biztonságos távolságot!

Applied conservational animal ecology in rural area under intensive farming
Due to the growing population and growing demand in the last decades, efficiency has become one of the most significant objectives and aspects of intensive agricultural production. While agricultural innovations focus on effective automation and the development of chemicals, long-term considerations require sustainable and improved natural conditions. Intensive farming and the reservation of our natural resources seem to contradict one another, but, we have to admit that the consequences of natural degradation are very costly in agriculture (e.g. artificial pest control as well as fertilization). Except for pests, low diversity and abundance of wild animals can find proper home in agrarian environments. This is, on one hand because of the disturbed environment, on the other hand because there are no suitable shelters, breeding and feeding sites. In this research We are seeking to answer the following question: is it possible to improve the natural state of the agricultural environment without hindering agricultural activity or even providing measurable advantages for farming? The research area is an orchard, a 200 hectare property owned by the Bold-Agro Ltd. in Derecske. Financed by rural subsidies, 1000 nest boxes were placed around this area in the last few years. One third of these nesting boxes have been used by birds so far; however, we do not yet have any exact and detailed data about what species and in what proportion have bred in the boxes. We also lack information about the breeding success. In this work we are planning to investigate the abundance and diversity of small birds living in the orchard. Moreover, we also plan to study if it is possible to increase species diversity and the population size of breeding birds by controlling the places and micro-habitat of the nest boxes.

A Pest megyei Farmos település határában több mint 10 éve zajlik békamentés a Duna-Ipoly Nemzeti Park Igazgatóság koordinálásával. 2007-től kezdve a természetvédelmi akcióprogram során begyűjtött és szaporódóhelyekre szállított kétéltűek begyűjtési helye adatbázisban van rögzítve. A területen megfigyelt barna ásóbékák egyedszáma nagy fluktuációt és az elmúlt években csökkenő tendenciát mutat (ugyanakkor az állomány több ezres egyedszámú). Az általunk tervezett vizsgálatokkal szeretnénk megtudni, hogy a barna ásóbékák egyedileg azonosíthatóak-e, nagy egyedszámok esetén számítógépes programokkal, illetve, hogy ez kiválthatja-e a hagyományos, invazív jelölési módszereket. A fényképek által történő azonosítás megkönnyíteni a terepi adatgyűjtéseket és semmilyen beavatkozásokkal nem jár, amely az állatok életminőségét vagy túlélési esélyeit csökkentené. Békák egyedi azonosításával gyűjtött adatok felhasználhatóak lennének vonuláskutatási vizsgálatokra, illetve állományméretek becslésére.
